AVENTA launches a high performance polymer solar collector

A collaboration between Chevron Phillips Chemicals International NV (Chevron Phillips Chemicals) and Aventa AS has resulted in a high temperature polymer collector, which is ready to be introduced to the global solar thermal market. The two companies have recently signed an agreement formalizing technical and commercial cooperation.

A solar collector converts sunlight to usable heat energy for domestic hot water preparation and space heating purposes. Traditionally, the main components in solar collectors are made of metals such as copper and aluminium, which are heavy and energy intensive to produce, transport and install.

 

The steady growth in the solar thermal market has motivated the search for new materials in solar thermal applications. Chevron Phillips Chemicals has developed and optimized a new high-performance polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) polymer grade of Xtel® XE 4500 for Aventa's new solar collector concept. The new material meets all the requirements for producing a polymer collector that is temperature resistant, aesthetically pleasing, and cost effective.

Aventa's solar collector concept demands materials suitable for permanent contact with water at medium to high temperatures under moderate pressure and variable temperature conditions. The new Xtel® PPS alloy grade has excellent hydrolytic stability and temperature resistance as well as maintains its shape, rigidity, and dimensional stability over time and temperature variation.

 

“With impressive elongation and impact resistance, our Xtel® XE PPS/elastomer alloys extend the traditional applications of high performance PPS and enable us to be a part of this challenging project,” said Mark Amelunke, general manager of Chevron Phillips Chemicals’ engineering polymers group. “By working closely with Aventa to understand their needs for the polymeric solar collector, we have been able to provide customer support far beyond material selection. We’ve offered processing tips, assisted with die optimization, and provided other value-added technical services,” Amelunke added.

 

Aventa's goal was to design and produce solar collectors of polymeric materials as architecturally appealing building modules with high dimensional flexibility for building adaptation and integration. Chevron Phillips Chemicals' new Xtel® XE 4500 has opened new possibilities with regard to design and environmental awareness.

 

The Aventa collectors, which come either with a black absorber, or painted with carefully chosen selective coatings in different colours, can be attractive, environmentally conscious elements added to offices, industrial or residential buildings.
