A sunshine story

SCATEC Solar's solar plant in Kalkbult, Northern Cape receives ample and positive mention in a lengthy article in Norway's leading newspaper Aftenposten.

The article is titled "En soskinnshistortie", which in Norwegian has a double meaning. Besides the literary translation "A sunshine story", it can also mean "a story with a happy ending". It highlights among other things the fact that the Kalkbult plant was the largest in Africa when it opened in 2014 and produces electricity sufficient for 35,000 household – at competitive prices. For the first time, solar energy is outcompeting coal-produced energy in the country. Most of the electricity produced in South Africa comes from coal and electricity shortages have been a major challenge the last few years.

One of the SANCOOP projects, Performance of PV modules in arid areas", led jointly by the institute of Energy Technology (IFE) in Norway and Stellenbosch University, is closely linked to Scatec Solar. The project aims at finding the best ways to minimise soiling of the solar panel to maximise their efficiency. For a project summary of the project, look for project no. 234200 in the SANCOOP project catalogue in the column on your right.
