The World's First Electric Fishing Vessel

Øra AS by Bent Gabrielsen has signed a contract to purchase Selfa Elmax 1099. The boat developed by Selfa Arctic AS will be named Karoline and becomes the world's first electric fishing boat.

Emission Free Fishing Operation

The vessel has been under construction since last autumn and has a 195kW battery pack on board as well as an electric propulsion motor. This enables a 100% emission free fishing operation. A similar installation on the engine ferry Ampere has shown very good results as regards to the reduction of fuel costs, which will be reduced by 60-70%. The vessel also produces less noise, vibration and emission than a traditional fishing vessel. With a generator installed on board, the vessel will have no constraints in terms of reach. Whilst being docked, the vessel will be charged via a 63 Amps 220 V course, with a normal charging time 6-8 hours. The electric fishing boat will be tested in Tjeldsundet, Norway late August.

The vessel and propulsion solution is developed by Selfa Arctic AS and Siemens. Selfa Arctic’s climate strategy is zero emission of CO2 from its own operations, and also to develop climate-friendly products. Their new electric vessel will be in place in Troms in September 2015 and be included in the daily operations of Øra As.

MAROFF, Sintef North and FHF

The vessel will for a three year period be part of a research project funded by FHF and the Research Council / MAROFF. The project, which will be managed by SINTEF in Tromso, will map the energy consumption and continue to develop the propulsion solution. The vessel is partially financed by Innovation Norway – Troms and will be presented to the Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg in August.

Selfa Arctic AS

Selfa Arctic AS is headquartered in Sandtorg in the Norwegian city Harstad and has two branches in Trondheim. Since 1987, they have been a leader in the market for coastal fishing vessels under 15 meters.
