Norsafe's Magnum 850 - One out of two that completed

Norsafe’s Magnum 850 demo boat was one out of two participants in the Lisbon Atlantic Endurance race that reached the final destination.

Norsafe's Magnum 850Due to the heavy winds and sharp waves in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal in late April, most of the participants of the LAEC resigned before the challenge started. The Norsafe boat started from La Coruna in northern Portugal, and several other boats were supposed to join in from Porto to Lisbon before High Speed Boat Operation (HSBO).

“The weather conditions were quite extreme. Several other boats resigned before departure, and it was only a catamaran and us that chose to continue the challenge to Lisbon”, says Ronald Schartner, who was one of the pilots on board the Magnum 850.

The LAEC is as much a psychological test as it is a physical one, and to this extent it is important for the organizers to know the level of experience of participating skippers and crew; it is equally important for entrants to ensure that all participants are suitable for the challenge.

“On our way from Porto to Lisbon, we had to assist another race participant. They were taking in water and had to be towed to shore. It was a quite dramatic situation”, says Schartner.

The Magnum 850 was on display during the High Speed Boat Operations (HSBO), and Norsafe got a lot of attention, together with the collaborators on the demo boat.

“We got a lot of positive attention during HSBO. People were standing in line at our stand, and the boat was full every time we took it for a test drive.

People who tested the boat was impressed by the seaworthiness of the Magnum 850 in rough sea, says Contract Manager Michel Saxlund.
