From FUGE to BIOTEK2021

15 March is the submission deadline for the new programme’s first call for proposals.

Follow-up to FUGE

Over the FUGE programme’s ten year existence it evolved from a basic research programme into a broader-based initiative, with relevance and benefit to industry and society as additional key areas. The FUGE programme played an important role in the creation of new Norwegian companies.

This is an important aspect of BIOTEK2021 as well. BIOTEK2021 will promote biotechnology research by funding large-scale, long-term projects that address wide-ranging societal challenges.

Biotech at the core

R&D in biotechnology should aim to generate new and improved products, services and processes which contribute to the emerging knowledge-based bioeconomy. A key objective of developing Norway’s fledgling bioeconomy is to maximise sustainable production and processing of renewable biomass for a variety of products.

Biotechnology is at the very core of the bioeconomy and a key element in the development of the agricultural, marine, industrial and health sectors.

Need for collaboration

“Biotechnology, together with nanotechnology and ICT, will be critical in order to meet society’s greatest challenges,” says Arvid Hallén, Director General of the Research Council of Norway.

“To achieve the best possible research results the Research Council will encourage effective collaboration between industry, the universities, university colleges and independent research institutes.”
