World Urban Forum 2012

The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development participated in the first week of September on the Sixth Session of World Urban Forum, on invitation from UN-Habitat.

The Forum is held every two years. Representatives from the Ministry were State Secretary Anne Beathe Tvinnereim and officials from the Housing and Building Department and the Department covering Municipal Affairs. The Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Foreign Affairs also participated. From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs State Secretary Arvinn Gadgil took part in the meeting.

World Urban Forum was established by the United Nations General Assembly to examine one of today’s most pressing challenges; the rapid urbanization and its impact on communities, cities, economies and environment. Internationally, poverty and issues concerning slum dwellings are central topics in this area. The overarching themes of this year’s Urban Forum were:

  1. Urban Planning, Institutions and Regulations, including Quality of Life.
  2. Equity and Prosperity: Distribution of Wealth and Opportunities.
  3. Productive Cities: Competitive and Innovative Cities.
  4. Urban Mobility, Energy and the Environment.

Ms Tvinnereim conducted the formal opening of the Gender Forum under WUF6. She participated in the panel of a Ministerial Roundtable Conference as representative of the European Countries, on the future of the cities. Furthermore she participated in Dialogue 2 on Equity and Prosperities of Cities. The objective of this Dialogue was to discuss catalysts for the changing of cities towards becoming more equitable, diverse and inclusive. Furthermore Ms Tvinnereim participated in bilateral meetings with the Swedish Minister of Housing and UN-Habitat’s Executive Director. Together with representatives from the departments of the Ministry Ms Tvinnereim joined other seminars, discussions and events during WUF6, as part of Norway’s participation in the international efforts aimed at urban development.
