Norway congratulates Ukraine on presidential election

‘I would like to congratulate the people of Ukraine on a successfully conducted presidential election. Despite the fact that many Ukrainians in Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea were prevented from participating, the preliminary statement of the election observers indicates that the election was conducted in an orderly manner,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.  

 

The official election result is not expected to be announced for some time. However, it seems clear that Petro Poroshenko will be Ukraine’s next president.  

‘Mr Poroshenko faces a momentous task as Ukraine’s new president. Not only will he have to combat corruption and lay the groundwork for investment and new economic growth, he will also have to build bridges between different parts of a strongly divided nation.  I think he understands the challenges ahead and the need for hard work and tough reforms. Ukraine’s democratically elected president has Norway’s support as he takes on these responsibilities,’ Mr Brende said. 

The international election observers, organised under the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), have indicated that the election in Ukraine was conducted in such a way that it reflects the will of the people of the country. 

‘It is important that all OSCE members, including Russia, recognise the outcome of the election and help bring much needed peace and stability to Ukraine,’ Mr Brende said.  

Norway will increase its support to Ukraine in 2014 by four times compared with 2013.
