Huldra dressed to the nines

In the Huldra conference room in the NPD building at Ullandhaug there are major changes in progress. A long white wall is in the process of becoming inspiring art – literally – under the direction of Elin Melberg.

The word INSPIRING covers a large part of the wall. The letters are painstakingly transformed into a glittering mosaic mirror. Behind this there are hundreds of glossy flower prints put together to make an explosive figure with a turquoise border.

”I hope people will enjoy working in here; that they become creative and manage to stay focused,” says Elin Melberg.

She and her assistant, Siv Evenmo – a student at Rogaland Art School – have been working on putting the piece in place on the wall for nearly a week. But planning and sketching started early in the spring after she was contacted by the NPD concerning the assignment. The finishing touch will be applied at the beginning of next week, according to the plan.

”I think it’s great that the NPD wants to surround itself with contemporary art  and that they dare to have a work of art right on the wall. Many grand buildings are being built in the region – unfortunately, not everyone thinks about ornamentation,” Melberg notes.

She often uses simple words in her work and is concerned with art being uplifting for those who work near by. The wall is detailed and dynamic, your impression changes depending on where you are in the room, how the light is focused, the time of day, year and weather conditions.

Elin Melberg works mostly with exhibitions, but she enjoys taking on assignments now and then – such as the Huldra project for the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate. In recent years she has also had ornamentation assignments for Gosen School, the University of Stavanger and the City of Stavanger.

Elin Melberg was born in Stavanger (1976). She graduated from the Royal College of Art in London (2002). Since 2003 she has lived and worked in Stavanger and has a studio on the premises of Tou Scene. Melberg is represented by Galleri Maria Veie in Oslo.
