CO2 storage atlas for the Norwegian continental shelf

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate’s (NPD’s) work to map the Norwegian continental shelf to determine possible storage locations for CO2 is now completed. The CO2 storage atlas covers areas of the Norwegian continental shelf open for exploration.

“Finding suitable, safe areas to store carbon dioxide is a precondition for carbon capture and storage (CCS). The NPD’s storage atlas represents pioneering work," says Minister Tord Lien.

The atlas covers the areas of the Norwegian continental shelf open for exploration, and confirms the significant CO2 storage potential on the shelf. Norway has considerable expertise in CO2 storage, and we have been storing CO2 offshore in Norway ever since our first CCS project started on Sleipner in 1996.

"By completing detailed mapping of the storage potential, Norway has come much further than most other countries both with regards to the mapping of the storage opportunities in itself and the development of detailed models for evaluating the suitability and estimating the potential. This knowledge will also be valuable for other international players," says Lien.
