Saithe: Prices set to rice in 2014

The catch of saithe north of 62°N has set to the total fishing quota at 119 000 tonnes for this year. In Norway they were 100 000 tonnes while Russia had 12 000 and third countries quota was about 4 487 tonnes, which means down from total of 140 425 tonnes in 2013. Nearly 9 000 tonnes left unfished last year.

SaitheA quota of 140 425 of 62°N, anda quota in the North Sea and Skagerrak of 91 220, kept the prices and supply of saithe at a stable level last year.

EU and Norway have not yet renewed an annual agreement on the total allowable final quota for the North Sea and Skagerrak so far.The quota is expected to be reduced, possibly by around 15 per cent, which will result in a total quota of 78 000 tonnes.

Saithe is a very popular fish in Germany. However, last year, the Norwegian exports of saithe to Germany went down because of a growing demand for fresh fish. At the same time, the quantity exported to Denmark increased significantly. Therefore the quantity increased slightly by 2.6 per cent. The total value, despite the increase in quantity went down for a 2.7 per cent. Two thirds of the saithe being landed by Danish and foreign vessels, or imported to Denmark, are filleted there before being exported. The largest markets are Germany and France. It is expected that the Danish processors will fight to keep up their market share. This may provoke that the Saithe market prices will get stronger this year.
