Norway and Russia to cooperate in the North

Norway and Russia are nearing an agreement on cooperation on marine safety and an emergency plan for combatting oil pollution in the northern regions.

Norway and Russia are nearing an agreement on cooperation on marine safety and an emergency plan for combatting oil pollution in the northern regions, public broadcaster NRK reports.

The reason for the planned cooperation is Russia’s plans for a major increase in the transport of oil along the Norwegian coast, from Russia to Europe and the US.

-The Norwegian public is increasingly concerned about the Russian oil transport along the Norwegian coast. I am pleased to declare that we are now in the process of entering into an agreement with Russia, Norwegian Fisheries Minister Svein Ludvigsen says.

The agreement will cover the exchange of expertice on protection against oil spills, and cooperation on the monitoring of oil tankers and the towing of large vessels along the Norwegian coast.
