Established in 1962, Norske Skogs first newsprint machine came online in 1966 at Skogn, Norway. It became the leading Norwegian paper and pulp producer during the 1970s and 1980s.
In the 1990s, the company built a strong European platform through acquisitions and new mill construction in Norway, France, Austria and the Czech Republic. Mills were also subsequently acquired in Germany and the Netherlands.
Since 2000, the company has become a leading global supplier by adding mills and activities in Asia, North America, South America and Australasia.
New Growth Markets
Norske Skog is well positioned in the new growth markets. The compay is the largest manufacturer of newsprint in Asia.
Chinese demand for newsprint is expected to rise by an annual average of seveneight percent up to 2010. From the autumn of 2005, a new mill in the Hebei province in China produces 475,000 tonnes of newsprint per year for this fast-growing market. The new paper machine at the Hebei mill?is be the biggest and most efficient newsprint machine in Asia.
Norske Skog is the only domestic newsprint manufacturer in Brazil, and by far the biggest producer in South America. With its large population, South America represents a very interesting market where demand is expected to grow.
The company is the only large manufacturer of publication paper to utilize fast-growing plantation forests in South America and Australasia.
