Position as PhD Research fellowavailable at the Department of Biosciences.The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with no compulsory work or for a period of 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work (teaching responsibilities at the department) contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department.Starting date as soon as possible, and no later than 01.10.2015. No one can be appointed for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution.

Job Description 

The PhD student project concerns the role of post-translational modifications in anoxic survival and will be attached to the strategic area for studies of post-translational modifications (MODIPROT) at the Department of Biosciences and to the project ”Mechanisms of anoxic survival” financed by the Norwegian Research Council (FRIMEDBIO). This project constitutes a new direction in the research on the extremely anoxia tolerant crucian carp, as it sets out to explore the roles of recently discovered signaling pathways, including protein modifications such as S-nitrosylation, S-sulfhydration, and O-GlcNAcylation. We are seeking a student with a background in biochemistry, cell biology and/or physiology. Ideally, the student should have some theoretical and practical background in identifying proteins or protein modifications. The person will work together with a team of physiologists focusing on anoxic survival mechanisms and a team of cell biologists / biochemists that are experts on the use of mass spectrometry for studies of protein structure and modifications.


The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent in biochemistry, cell biology or physiology or related area.

Candidates without a Master's degree have until 30 June, 2015 to complete final exam. The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
