PhD position within life studies

A PhD position is available at the Department of Chemistry. The appointment has a duration of 3 years with the possibility of 1 year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department. (To undertake the teaching duties it is a requirement that the candidate speaks Norwegian or another Scandinavian language). The position is financed by the Research Council of Norway under the ENERGIX program, within the SafeLiLife project. The project includes advanced studies of battery life and ageing, thermal effects, both with respect to thermal history and operation temperatures, and safety studies. 

The PhD-project encompasses thermal studies of Li-ion batteries, with respect to ageing and thermal history. In particular, thermal conductivity and heat generation studies will be a part of the project, as well as thermal modeling. Both experimental and theoretical work will be expected. 

The candidate will be a part of a project team consisting of researchers from NTNU, HIST, FFI and IFE. 

The current relevant research fields at the Department of Chemistry include fuel cells, salt power plants, and transport in heterogeneous systems. Further information is available at: http://www.chem.ntnu.no/nonequilibrium-thermodynamics/ 

The applicant must have a MSc in chemistry, physics, electrochemistry, in chemical or mechanical engineering. Knowledge of thermodynamics beyond the basic level is required. A documented experience of laboratory work is also necessary. Experience from thermodynamic and electrochemical modeling and/or experience with Li-ion battery research will be considered an advantage. 

The successful candidate should be creative, with a strong ability to work problem oriented. She/he should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams. A large industrial team is connected to the project, and the candidate will have ample opportunity to interact with partners of this team. 

The regulations for the PhD program at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required and C or higher of the BSc. The appointment of the PhD fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study. A contract will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment and work-related duties.

The appointment will be made according to the general regulations regarding university employees. PhD research positions are remunerated in salary code 1017, normally at start wage level 50 on the Norwegian Government pay scale, gross NOK 420 800 per year before tax. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.
