The Department of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) announces the following vacant associate professorship in Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering (Water and Wastewater Engineering). The Department has at present 8 professors, 3 associate professors, 5 part-time professors/associate professors and about 30 PhD candidates/researchers. 

The Department covers the disciplines Hydraulic Engineering and Water and Wastewater Engineering, and has organized its activities in two research groups accordingly. Teaching is organized as part of NTNU's MSc program in Civil and Environmental Engineering, where the Department offers MSc-specialization in its fields, as well as a PhD-program in the same areas. The Department of Hydraulic and Environmental engineering seeks to strengthen its research group for water and wastewater engineering. Thus, we are looking for an associate professor in the field of water treatment and water analysis. The appropriate candidate will be responsible for the operation of the department's advanced equipment for particle characterization (CLSM, FFF, etc.) and for teaching and research in the field of water treatment with particular emphasis on processes for treatment of drinking water. It is expected that the appropriate candidate has a strong publication record and extensive knowledge water treatment methods in general and in particle analysis and characterization in particular. The successful applicant shall document qualifications as well as scientific expertise in the above mentioned research fields. It is also expected that he or she has experience in the supervision of MSc and PhD students as well as he or she shows a keen interest in initiating research and in establishing contact with the industry and the authorities. 

The department is currently cooperating with several industrial companies and with municipalities on several research programs related to water and wastewater engineering. These projects are considered important to meet the department's ambition and fulfill its research strategy in the field "Clean water to Norway and the world". 

The successful applicant for an associate professorship must be able to document his/her extensive disciplinary qualifications in important fields within the discipline. His/her individual work must document scientific expertise in one or more parts of the discipline, particularly the specialist fields the Associate Professorship has specific responsibility for. Emphasis will be placed on the ability to supervise and initiate research and development work. 

Emphasis will be placed on pedagogical skills. The evaluation of the candidate will be based on documented pedagogical material, including pedagogical education/training, the presentation of academic work, experience from supervising masters-level students and doctoral candidates, and teaching as well as other pedagogical matters. The evaluation will consider both the quality and the scope. 

Academic staff who are employed without having a formal pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching and are unable to document equivalent qualifications, are required to successfully complete a recognized course that gives a pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching within two years of accepting the appointment. The University offers such courses. 

The applicants that have been short-listed will be invited for interviews and a demonstration of their pedagogical ability, usually in the form of a trial lecture. 

The associate professor is to be jointly responsible for disciplinary matters together with other academic staff in the department. The associate professor is required to participate in teaching activities in accordance with the relevant curriculum and assist in further developing the teaching programme, including continuing education. The professor is to supervise masters students, research fellows and doctoral candidates in his/her discipline. 

The associate professor is obliged to follow the regulations that concern changes and developments within the discipline and/or the organizational changes concerning activities at the University. 

It is assumed that newly employed staff in academic positions who do not already master a Scandinavian language are to obtain, within three years, knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at an equivalent standard to level three in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided at the Department of Language and Communication Studies. The University provides such courses. 

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.

The position is remunerated according to wage levels 57 to 77 on the Norwegian State salary scale, with gross salary fromNOK473 100 toNOK696 300 per annum. The salary is adjusted according to the recent wage negotiations, and given subject to the final approval of the Storting (the Norwegian Parliament). There will be a 2 % deduction to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.

  • A list of all publications with bibliographical references.

Joint work will be evaluated. If it is difficult to identify the contributions from individuals in a joint piece of work, applicants are to enclose a short descriptive summary of what he/she did in this connection.
